№17 what makes a good foreign language teacher
To be a good teacher you must be genuinely interested in what you are doing. A real teacher catalyzes in his pupils the burning desire to know and love for the truth and beauty. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since its medium is the human mind and the human spirit. It's an incredible responsibility to be a teacher that is the reason why humanity has the deepest respect for them.
But what makes a good foreign language teacher? Modern methods of language teaching, with their emphasis on the teacher as model and the constant interchange between teacher and student, require a more sympathetic relationship (доверительные отношения) between teacher and student than did earlier, more impersonal methods. When people are asked to describe what makes a good teacher many common characteristics are listed. 1)First on the list is the teacher's thorough knowledge of the subject. 2)The next most important concern is how the teacher goes about imparting that knowledge (передавать знания) of this subject. Most students request a variety within the lesson hour. It is nice when a foreign language teacher organizes a lesson so that students have a little grammar, then a dictation, and then some reading or a discussion. 3) A good teacher should avoid monotony. He shouldn't do all the talking in class and he must involve the whole class in the activity. Students mustn't be passive learners. Such methods as discussions, debates and language games are useful and enjoyable. 4) One of the most important qualities of a good foreign language teacher is teacher's sense of humor and his ability to take the tension out of language learning, but he mustn't use up precious class time telling personal anecdotes. 5) A good preparation for the lesson and a conscientious attitude toward student paper is very important. 6) We also should say about the student-teacher relationship. Most students express a desire for a sympathetic teacher who “remembers what it was like to be a student”. The teacher should know each student as an individual. He shouldn't only talk to the best students, he shouldn't embarrass students by caustic remarks. (язвительные замечания) 8) A good teacher must be confident and enjoys his profession and specialization. 9) And finally a teacher should be concerned about his appearance: be neatly dressed, try to look nice.
Thus the composite ideal teacher is the teacher with infinite knowledge (безграничные знания) and energy, impeccable ( безупречный)teaching techniques, the sense of humor and talent for discipline, along with personal charm and eternal patience. But as one understanding student wrote, 'What makes a good teacher is someone who tries to do everything what is listed above. But I understand that teachers are only people like me.'
