Описание работы

The stories I have chosen are from all around the country and can be a good example of the darker side of Great Britain. Most of them don’t have serious evidences proving the veracity of some of them. However, many British people think that they are true.
But whether we choose to believe or not in ghosts and spirits, there is no denying that we only have to look through history to find a wide range of spooky encounters.

Are ghosts dangerous?

The main problem of people is fear of things that we don’t understand. Ghosts are normally harmless for the most part and have no desire to bring harm to anyone. They are just like people; most of us are good in nature and paranormal phenomena as well. That’s why some people are sure that you are much more likely to hurt yourself by running away or fainting and hitting your head than anything they might do.

There may be a few more mischievous human spirits that will do these things to bother you and scare you on purpose. They may just be a prankster or maybe they want you to leave the old home or not to change something in the home.  These human spirits account for a majority of the hauntings we encounter and are relatively harmless. Yes, there are extreme cases and sometimes they can cause dangerous situations, but this is not the norm.

But on the other hand there are many stories about a spirit of any kind causing great damage to people. There are also claims of people who are living with poltergeist that say they have been attacked violently in some way. The most important thing to remember when hearing such claims is how much you trust the source. Because there are also such stories which don’t have evidences and it gives us a thought that these stories were fabricated.

But whether you wish to believe such reports about people who have been hurt by a ghost is up to you, but my opinion is that they are not dangerous. However the honest answer is that you can be physically harmed by contact with ghosts and other things that go bump in the night.

The good news is that you are very unlikely to ever encounter an entity this evil so you probably don’t have to worry about it.

I’d like to share with you some stories about dangerous ghosts which you’d better not to meet:

  1. Cambridgeshire, Upware. Area around Devil’s Ditch haunted by the Black Shuck, Odin’s Dog of War. Though The Black Shuck’s appearance may differ from one account to the next, some claiming that it’s eyes glow red, others yellow or green, some that it has only one eye like a Cyclops and others that The Black Shuck is a headless phantom floating upon mist instead of walking on the ground, all tales say the same thing… to meet him is a terrible omen of death.

  1. Chesir, Bosley. One woman made drunk John Naden murder her husband, Robert Brough, his employer. She emptied his pockets to make it look like thieves had attacked him. If John hadn't got drunk he would have remembered to take the knife from under Robert’s body; but he didn't and that was his downfall. Policemen convicted him because of the knife and the fact he had no alibi. John was hanged on the gallows on Gun Hill. He still gets drunk and you'll find his ghost by the stiles that are made from the wood of the gallows. Be warned! He’s not the friendliest of ghosts who can attack people and you never know when he'll appear.

  1. Cornwall, Pentyn. A ghostly coach, drawn by headless horses appears just before Christmas each year in Penryn. People must avert their eyes when it passes or they will be spirited away.

  1. County Durham, Raby Castle. Gilbert’s marriage was a disappointment to Lady Barnard and her husband. They begged him not to marry the woman, because she was not suitable. He defied them and went ahead with the marriage away. His father was so angry that he tried to destroy the castle so that Gilbert wouldn’t enjoy his inheritance. He managed to kill all the deer in the park, strip lead from the roof and sell some of the furniture.

He had to stop after Gilbert sued him and he was told to pay for the repairs. Gilbert’s mother supported her husband in his actions and remained angry with her son for his defiance. Even in death she’s still angry and you can see her walking the halls, knitting furiously, so furiously that her needles glow white-hot. Lady Barnard was known as “Old Hell Cat” in life because of her bad temper and she hasn’t mellowed – so be careful if you see her. You never know what to expect from her.

  1. County Durham, Durham Cathedral. A secret passage is said to lead from the cathedral to Finchale Abbey but it is so full of horrors that nobody can stand going into it.

  1. Cumbria, Levens Hall. People turn away a starving woman because she was a gipsy. They didn’t want the likes of her in their precious house. With her dying breath she cursed them. No son would inherit until the year the River Kent didn’t flow and a white fawn was born in the park. They had a herd of Norweigian black fallow deer, white offspring were rare. It worked. No son inherited until 1896 when the river froze and a white fawn was born. She stall wanders around the grounds and outside in the road. If you see her, let her in otherwise she can curse you too.

  1. Devon, Berry Pomeroy Castle. Sisters Pomeroy let a man come between them and ruin their sisterly love. They both loved the same man and Eleanor thought he would love Margaret over her. In a jealous rage, she locked her in the dungeon beneath the tower and left the sister to starve to death. The hours Margaret spent wishing the end would come but life dragged on. She suffered so much and yet her sister did nothing. She only hopes she thought it was worth it.

Margaret still walks the ruins and she knows that she leaves a lasting feeling of fear and hatred with those people who have seen her. Some even say that if you see her then you may die.

  1. Kent, The Shipwright arms. The captain’s poor ship and all his lads were lost at sea. But he survived. He made it onto the mud flats and dragged his weary bones towards the only light on the horizon. He was so cold and wet right through. He made it to the weather-boarded building and banged on the floor. But the miserable wretch told him to go away. It was late and he was unwilling to open the door. The cold got to the captain and he died on the doorstep. The next morning the owner opened the door and found his body.

He’s a frequent visitor to this drinking place. He likes to frighten the customers. First the air turns cold, and then they smell tobacco, run and tar. Then he appears and glances at them. If you are weak enough you can have a heart attack because of such “joke”.

  1. Lancashire, Black Abbey Road, Accrington. The site of the former Black Abbey is haunted by the ghost of a beautiful young girl whose piercing screams terrorize any witnesses. Be careful otherwise you can lose your hearing.

  1. Leicestershire, Bosworth Hall. Sir Wolston Dixie’s daughter, Ann was in love with the gardener’s son. He visited Ann in her room late at night. But one day her father found out and didn’t approve their relations. She kept the meetings because she knew how he would react.

But her father set traps in the grounds of their house. They were meant for the gardener’s son, but on his particular night they arranged to meet in his hut and it was she who stepped into one of the traps. She suffered from terrible injuries but she dragged herself from the garden to her room. She lost too much blood and died.
