Санкт-Петербургский  государственный  горный университет – первое в России высшее техническое учебное заведение, основанное в 1773 году, Указом императрицы Екатерины II как воплощение идей Петра I и М.В. Ломоносова о подготовке собственных специалистов для развития горнозаводского дела – основополагающей государственной отрасли. Санкт-Петербургский горный университет представляет собой один из ведущих в своей области научно-образовательных центров России, обучает более 8,5 тысяч студентов, ведёт подготовку бакалавров, магистров по 8 направлениям и специалистов на 8 факультетах. Вуз готовит специалистов для всех отраслей горно-металлургического и нефтегазового комплекса, геологической службы, промышленного и гражданского строительства России, стран ближнего и дальнего зарубежья. В Горном университете ведутся интенсивные исследования по основным проблемам развития сырьевой базы страны, рационального природопользования, разработки прогрессивных энергосберегающих технологий добычи и переработки полезных ископаемых. Университет имеет Горный музей, который хранит уникальные коллекции, в котором находится более 200 тысяч экспонатов, собранных со всех континентов и более чем из 80 стран мира. Главная библиотека университета насчитывает около полутора миллионов изданий книг и журналов, которые имеют большое научно-историческое значение. Горный университет имеет высший государственный статус образовательной системы России, является особо ценным объектом культурного наследия народов Российской Федерации, награжден четырьмя правительственными наградами.  В Санкт-Петербургском горном университете поддерживается и развивается около 75 видов спорта. Университет имеет собственный кампус.

St. Petersburg State Mining University - Russia's first higher technical educational institution, founded in 1773 by the Decree of the Empress Catherine II as an embodiment of the ideas of Peter I and Michail Lermontov of preparing in-house expertise for the development of mining and metallurgical business - basic public sector. St. Petersburg Mining University is one of the leaders in their field of scientific and educational centers in Russia, trains more than 8500(eight and a half thousand) students, is preparing a bachelors, masters in 8 directions and specialists at 8 faculties. The university trains specialists for all branches of mining and smelting, and oil and gas, geological survey, industrial and civil construction in Russia, CIS and foreign countries. In the Mining University of intensive research on the basic problems of the country's resource base, environmental management, development of advanced energy-saving technologies for the extraction and processing of minerals. The University has a Mining Museum, which holds a unique collection that contains more than 200 thousand exhibits collected from all continents and more than 80(eighty) countries. Home University Library has about half a million titles of books and magazines that are of great scientific and historical value.
