San Francisco

San Francisco is located on the narrow hilly peninsula separating an internal bay-gulf of San Francisco from open ocean. The passage Golden Gate conducting in a bay, limits the city territory from the north. Presence of a convenient sea bay has transformed San Francisco into the main port named «a gate to Pacific ocean» and important naval base of the USA at Pacific coast. Officially the city of San Francisco is called just since 1847. Before this settlement carried the Spanish name of Herba Buena. Having arisen at southwest coast of a bay of San Francisco, the city promptly won all new territories from nearby hills.
