The stories I have chosen are from all around the country and can be a good example of the darker side of Great Britain. Most of them don’t have serious evidences proving the veracity of some of them. However, many British people think that they are true.
But whether we choose to believe or not in ghosts and spirits, there is no denying that we only have to look through history to find a wide range of spooky encounters.

The castle is haunted by Janet, a former housekeeper, whose ghost can be seen dressed in a long pink and white skirt, white blouse and mobcap.
This village is haunted by a number of ghosts including a girl who plays the spinet at Sundial Cottage, the Black Aboot who is seen in the church and churchyard at Easter, All Saints Day and Christmas and a spectral shepherd and his herd in Swindon Lane.

Lilia Seton displeased her husband because she didn’t bear him a son. Her death came in May 1601. It remains a secret and then her husband married her niece.

The ghost of a Green Lady haunts the castle. She was killed by her father when he found out she was carrying and illegitimate child.
Hampshire
It was Mistletoe Bough’s wedding day and they were playing hide and seek. She found an old chest and hid inside where she suffocated.
Since Blind Peter’s death, a loyal servant, he have guarded this place but people can see him only on Halloween.
The vicar was a very good one, always tended to his parishioners but his courage left him when the plague infected the village and lest then to face the disease alone.
Haunted by Florence Nightingale who visited the church and is buried there.
A monk with a limp haunts Cathedral Close
On the 2nd August, the ghost of King William II haunts the route the Rufus Stone, where he was murdered, to Winchester. This is the anniversary of his death.
Haunted by several ghosts including; Roundhead soldiers, the sound of running footsteps – thought to be a murdered messenger and a ghostly flock of sheep.
Herefordshire
Haunted by the ghosts of Roman soldiers who march through the streets on nights when there is a full moon.

The captain was lost at sea. But he survived. He made it to the weather-boarded building and banged on the door. But he didn’t open. The next morning the owner opened the door and found her body.
The grounds are haunted by 6 Saxons who were murdered by the Normans.
The city is haunted by the ghost of Archbishop Simon Sudbury who was murdered during the Wat Tyler revolt of 1381.
The church is haunted by the ghosts of 2 highwaymen, named Weston, who were hanged in 1782. It’s also haunted by the ghosts of a man in a red uniform.
Lancashire
Catholic martyr was executed for heresy in 1679. And he returned to his birthplace to find comfort.
One Catholic woman was hanged instead of priest when an army of Roundheads came.
Elizabeth Hesketh loved her husband very much. And when he didn’t return from the war she refused to eat. She grew weak and then died.
Dorothy Southworth fell in love wuth the heir to a local knightly house, but only problem was that my love was a Protestant. They had to elope but her brother killed him and she was sent to convent where she became insane.
George was questioned long but he wouldn’t give in. They made him mad and he stamped his foot on the ground and told them that his footprint would remain there forever. He was questioned again and then burnt alive as a heretic.
The streets are haunted by a headless, spectral hound – sometimes thought to be an omen of a tragic event to come.
The site of the former Black Abbey is haunted by the ghost of a beautiful young girl whose piercing screams terrorize any witnesses.

Donna Leonora Oviedo loved a man. But he refused her feelings and told her he was happily married, so she let him go. Once he had gone there was nothing left for her and she took her own life.
John Edward Lancaster was making his way back to Ludborough Station when he stepped straight ino the path of the train and he was killed instantly.
The ghost of a Gilbertine Canoness can be heard walking on the gravel that once surrounded the priory.
Haunted by a witch who has taken the form of a hare.
Ostler’s (Oslears) Lane is haunted by a phantom carriage and horses, whose coachman has his head on a box beside him.

London
During a siege at Burwell Castle Geoffrey De Mandville got careless, he removed his helmet to wipe his brow and was shot by a first class archer. He died a week later from the arrow wound to his neck.
The open spaces and footpaths around the Chase are haunted by the ghost of a red-cloaked knight.

Emma loved her husband but he thought she had affair. His jealously engulfed him and murdered her.
The ghost of William Windham II haunts the library, he started the collection of books housed here.

Northamptonshire

Northumberland

Constance de Beverley was a nun in the Abbey. She fell in love with a knight. She knew it was wrong but her love for him was powerful and she couldn’t stop herself. When her crime was discovered, they bricked her up in the dungeon and left me her to die.
Has a reputation for werewolf sightings.
The road between Ruswarp and Sleights is haunted by Goosey, the ghost of a murdered village simpleton.
Just off Boulby Cliff, the ghost of a girl can be seen walking in the air along the old cliff line. She died here when the cliff collapsed under her.
Nottinghamshire
Black Friar wanted revenge because his home was sold to the Byron family. When one of the family died he would turn up and laugh.
Elizabeth Shepherd was on the way home when a man stacked her. He killed her and left her by the road.
John Spencer killed 2 men and he was dragging one of the bodies to the river when a man came by and he had to escape. He was caught a few days later and executed at Nottingham SummerAssize.
The lanes around the village are haunted by the ghost of Tom Otter, a highwayman hanged for the mufder of his wife.
Haunted by the ghost of a spectral monk.
Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, is said to haunt the castle – she has also been seen at Castle Rising Castle in Norfolk.
Oxfordshire
Sarah Fletcher’s husband left her. He decided to marry another woman. She hanged herself from their bed with a pocket-handkerchief and a small piece of cord.
Rosamund Clifford loved Henry II. They had been together for several years but his wife Eleanor was jealous and she poisoned Rosamund.
Sister Maude was in one the monk’s cells when he was caught. They blamed her, they said she led them astray. They burned her at the stake outside the monastery.
The ghost of Amy Robsart haunts the site of Cumnor Hall, the wife of Robert Dudley, she died mysteriously in 1560.
A strange black cloud haunts the road from Witney to Burford. Anyone driving throughit experience a feeling of terror.

John Davies was trying to help the widow Morris and her daughter, Jane, run their farm. His hard work impressed Jane and she abandoned her fiancé in favor of him. Robert Parker, Jane’s ex-fiance crossed up him (stole some money and left evidence against his enemy) and John was found guilty and sentenced to death.
