To begin with, we are living in time of rapid scientific and technological progress, which is accompanied by an ever increasing consumption of the world’s natural resources. Such vital sources of life as air, water, and minerals are being wasted and destroyed, what may lead to inevitable negative consequences. The most alarming problems I want to raise are climate change and depletion of natural resources.
By and large, many people look at the climate change as the biggest environmental issue of our time. Climate change certainly has the potential to turn this world into one giant environmental disaster, and science warns us that we are running out of time to do something about it. The most obvious solution on how to tackle climate change is to significantly reduce the carbon emissions on global level but world leaders are sadly still finding it impossible to agree new international climate deal that would regulate this matter. Eventually, the world is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
Apart from this, another urgent problem concerns the depletion of natural resources. Our planet gets poorer because of the abuse and misuse of necessary resources. For instance, by the 21 century, forests that human thought were endless are shrinking before their eyes. Besides, forests are not only a source of timber, they perform a wide range of social and ecological functions. Namely, they provide a livelihood for forest dwellers, protect and enrich soils, supply us with fresh air.
In conclusion, from my perspective, all these problems are interconnected and the only way world can respond to the environmental challenges of this magnitude is to act as one, united in every sense of the word. Sadly, world is anything but united when it comes to environment and ecology and "the difference in opinions" still prevents world in acting as one. Take climate change talks for instance. So much talk, and so little action.
