China today is very attractive place for setting up business, its economy growth rates, population, country size and recourses everything attracts foreigners and potential investors. However in terms of culture it’s often a big issue for expatriate managers who controls and communicate with local employees. It’s very challenging, stressful often very difficult to find the golden middle between being strict and understanding. However Chinese are very respectful to their boss in every situation but often it’s due to their culture, and nothing personal that’s different from Western view who able to talk back when they are not satisfied. It comes from Confucian beliefs son have to respects his father, wife to husband, employees to their boss and everybody show respect to the government. Besides that there are loads of misunderstandings to my mind it’s unexplainable it’s just their way of thinking, habits, views and it often brings mass of problems. I will never know is mistake was made on purpose to save money or time or just because of laziness or it was just verbal misunderstanding.
All five cultural dimensions of Hofstede’s framework can be explained in Confucian beliefs. High power distance, collectivistic beliefs, masculinity, low level of uncertainty avoidance reflects in their business size Chinese often prefer small, medium or family owned businesses and last regarding long term orientation Chinese are highly pragmatic and future-oriented it comes from past, history and philosophy as Chinese are extremely superstitious everything is meaningful for them and if be aware of this often numbers, colours and some rituals that might be insignificant for us might be mostly meaningful for them.
They are very collectivistic due to their communistic political system; it’s often good because a company they work for become their second home because they appreciate a lot their managers and getting close to their colleagues to be prepared for certain situations managers also must know how is family important for Chinese people it also comes from Confucianism. For Chinese-Face is very important, they will do everything to keep a reliable reputation of themselves.
Besides all these the language barrier definitely exists as just a while ago Chinese didn’t pay enough attention to foreign languages learning, now there are more and more qualified professionals who fluently can speak English or other language, year to year Chinese become more open minded, more often go to study abroad.
To my mind working in international company engages people to pay less attention on their personal habits and value customs of others. Even some little things like gestures might be a result of significant misunderstandings. I believe that if you will pay more attention to things happening around and people that’s surrounds you their behaviour, routine, wants, be interested in their traditions, they will appreciate you and respond back it will bring understanding and success.
